Smart grids are the focus of new Cisco router and switch

Networking gear maker Cisco is providing some pieces to make the vision of smart-grid technology a reality in the utility industry. It's pushing out a router and a network switch aimed at helping utilities develop better communication systems that can one day connect "smart meters" with power sources. "The idea is that data can be interpreted and used to make the flow of electrons more productive, to make everything more efficient around the grid," says Paul De Martini, Cisco's chief technology officer for Smart Grid.
