Drinking a protein shake beforehand and exercising on an empty stomach are ways for a diet to derail a workout, registered dietitian Cynthia Sass writes. She writes that eating a small quantity of protein can prevent stomach cramps that may come from digesting a shake and warns against overusing energy bars after a workout as that can lead to overeating later.
