ESMA chairman voices concern about hedge funds and short sales

Steven Maijoor, chairman of the European Securities and Markets Authority, said investors should receive more information about risks associated with hedge funds. "It will be important to achieve a balance between increasing investor protection while avoiding imposing undue costs on fund managers," Maijoor said at an industry conference. "At the same time, regulators will need to be provided with sufficient information on the activities of alternative investment fund managers." He also said an EU plan to curtail short sales of sovereign debt could be problematic.
