San Francisco officials OK $1.2B Parkmerced upgrade

San Francisco's Board of Supervisors has signed off on a $1.2 billion plan to overhaul Parkmerced, a neighborhood of high-rise residential towers. The project will replace 1,500 rent-controlled town homes with 7,200 energy-efficient units in a bid to make the area more environment-friendly. The plan has met strong opposition from tenants, since it would mean the demolition of garden apartments and possibly the elimination of rent controls.
