Cardiologist focuses on heart's potential to regenerate

The notion that heart cells can't regenerate after being deprived of oxygen always struck Dr. Roberto Bolli as "odd." Bolli, chief of cardiology at the University of Louisville, initiated the Cardiac Stem Cells in Patients with Cardiomyopathy, or SCIPIO, trial in 2009, which documented dramatic improvements in heart patients treated with their own stem cells. He has since enhanced the process for harvesting stem cells and aims to begin a larger study this fall.
