Engineers prepare to drain Chinese "quake lakes"

Military engineers in China are preparing to evacuate at least 100,000 residents living below a "quake lake" that was created when part of a mountain fell into the Jianhe River, forming a dam of sorts holding back some 34 billion gallons of water. Soldiers are carrying in dynamite to blast the structure while engineers scramble to reinforce 687 kilometers of downstream embankments to prevent flooding as the lake is drained. In addition to 35 such lakes, the government says 69 damaged reservoirs also present an "immediate" danger.
