Sony, cable to make TVs that cut need for set-tops

Makers of digital set-top boxes might be in trouble if Sony Corp. and its six new allies among cable TV operators succeed in their plan to produce digital TV sets that can receive digital-cable service without going through set-top boxes. That would enable cable subscribers to receive digital-cable channels as well as advanced services such as video on demand.
