Japan aims to improve corporate-governance standards

Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry plans to establish guidelines for appointing independent directors at listed firms as a way to improve corporate governance. "I would like to impose some kind of compulsory rule on the appointment of outside directors," said Hiroaki Niihara, a director at the ministry.
