Pillay seeks investigation of Sri Lanka fighting

High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem Pillay demanded a war crimes investigation into the conduct of both the Sri Lankan government and Tamil Tigers during a war that has cost tens of thousands of lives. Though the resolution for a probe has the support of China, Cuba, Pakistan and others, a bloc of European nations led by Switzerland has called for a resolution that condemns the loss of life but falls short of an independent war crimes investigation. The government of Sri Lanka rejected the bid, claiming that the civil war was an internal dispute not subject to international scrutiny.
