Congressional scrutiny of United-Continental merger begins

The CEOs of United Airlines and Continental Airlines will answer questions about their airlines' proposed merger in the Senate today, even as key House leaders expressed disappointment with the written answers provided by the airlines to the House Judiciary Committee and its competition subcommittee. Lawmakers complained that the airlines "failed to provide sufficient assurances" regarding routes and hubs, but Continental said it plans to provide additional information in hearings next month. In their written answers, the carriers did say they expect up to $900 million in additional revenue due to "network synergies" and up to $300 million in cost savings from combined computer systems, ad buys and the like.
