Education jobs bill is lacking congressional support

A House committee hearing on a $23 billion congressional funding measure -- designed to help avoid what could amount to between 100,000 and 300,000 education layoffs nationwide -- was canceled Thursday, while a similar measure in the Senate lacks support -- developments that put the funding in jeopardy. Some lawmakers are concerned over deficit spending in an election year, but Education Secretary Arne Duncan and some top lawmakers have been lobbying for the funding. However, President Barack Obama has not advocated for the funding and did not make such a request part of his budget proposal.
