House panel discusses benefits of synthetic biology

Synthetic biology needs a favorable regulatory environment, time and collaboration before advances in the field can be used to produce vaccines, cheap drugs and clean fuel, scientists said at a House committee hearing. The hearing comes after a team of scientists and engineers, including AIChE member Jay Keasling, at the J. Craig Venter Institute said they were able to develop the first artificial life organism.
