Oregon pilot program pushes sustainable landscaping

Oregon has developed three pilot sites for a new rating system called the Sustainable Sites Initiative, which will assess the "greenness" of an entire site rather than focus on just the building itself. The program, one of three in the nation, is trying to get more Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design points for landscaping outside buildings, says Steve Windhager, director of the Sustainable Sites Initiative. "This goes beyond the coarse-grained and goes much deeper," he said. "How is air quality affected? How do we design to mitigate the heat-island effect on the site?"
