Massachusetts hospitals vary widely in what they charge, according to a state report that also found health insurers take a double hit because the most expensive facilities also have higher patient volumes. State lawmakers next month will hold hearings on controlling health care costs. In response, large academic hospitals argue their pricing reflects having expensive programs, such as burn units and neurosurgery, available at all times.
