Smart grids to generate fourfold return on investment, study finds

The long-term benefits of smart grid technology will far outweigh the cost of deploying it, according to an Electric Power Research Institute study. The study found that the added efficiency, reliability and profitability of modernizing the energy grid could produce financial benefits totaling up to $2 trillion, on an estimated total investment of as much as $480 billion -- much of which would be provided by the consumer.
