Do the risks of influenza research outweigh rewards?

Biosecurity experts Lynn Klotz and Edward Sylvester argue in this opinion piece that certain types of research on viruses such as influenza pose an unacceptable risk to global human health that is not balanced by the potential scientific gains. Laboratories are attempting to make dangerous viruses such as H5N1 and canine distemper transmissible between humans in an attempt to learn more about the pathogens, but Klotz and Sylvester argue that the work puts millions of people at risk around the world.
