Self-insurance plans to open up to small businesses

Some health insurers are looking to cater to smaller businesses that are wary of health care cost increases under the Affordable Care Act by offering self-insurance plans. These plans, traditionally an option only for larger companies, will allow small firms to pay employees' medical bills directly, and they could mean savings for businesses with young, healthy workers. On the other hand, they could put businesses at risk financially if an employee has a major accident or illness.
