FDA official: Opioid rules an "undertaking that will take time"

New risk-management guidelines for opioid painkillers might not be finalized in time to regulate pain drugs nearing FDA approval, said Dr. John Jenkins, director of the FDA's Office of New Drugs. The safety requirements, formulated to prevent misuse and abuse of the treatments, might take time to implement given the large number of prescribers who might need training, Jenkins said.
