Crane fly is invading New York state in large numbers

A new crop of crane flies has the potential to wreak havoc in New York state and can cause damage to golf greens and residential lawns by attacking the healthy roots of grasses. One superintendent at a golf course near Buffalo says the flies' larvae are the worst he has ever seen. The adult version of the flies, which came to Erie and Niagara counties back in 2004 from southern Ontario, does not bite and lives only a couple of days.
