CMS poised to issue decision on FDG-PET coverage

Medical imaging groups including SNMMI are waiting for a final decision from CMS that could restrict FDG-PET coverage and use. Imaging groups wrote to CMS expressing concern that patients "will be forced to make the choice of either [forgoing] treatment or agreeing to pay out of pocket for the scan." The plan, if finalized, would allow local Medicare Administrative Contractors to decide on FDG-PET coverage rather than set a national policy. CMS is expected to announce a decision in June. The agency is also poised to decide whether to keep requiring PET centers to submit patient data to the National Oncologic PET Registry.
