Keep tabs on your competitors' marketing efforts

Google Alerts and social media are among the free tools entrepreneurs can use to keep track of how competitors are marketing themselves, writes Jim Joseph. Sign up for your competition's mailing lists, shop secretly to gauge customer service, monitor competitor websites and pick up their materials at trade shows, he recommends. "The goal here is to make sure all the marketing elements that form your brand experience are better than those of your competitors," Joseph writes.
