Nonprofit offers support to help students stay in school

The Communities in Schools of Cape Fear, N.C., program appears to have had success toward its goal of giving students the support they need to stay in school. The purpose of the nonprofit organization, which nationally is based in Virginia, is "to surround students with a community of support." Among other things, the program connects students with mentors and establishes after-school programs, while site coordinators work with teachers and guidance counselors to support the social, emotional and academic needs of at-risk students.
