Retailers turn to apps to track in-store shoppers, make suggestions

Some U.S. retailers are starting to greet customers with a smartphone application called Swirl, lending brick-and-mortar stores a modern youth appeal. "Retailers want to give consumers something that's value-added and does what an expert salesperson might do," Swirl Networks' Hilmi Ozguc says. The iPhone app uses sensors to find customers in the store and send them "personalized offers and recommendations," Natasha Baker writes.
