Cable companies scramble to meet "7/07" deadline

While the FCC's mandate banning cable companies from deploying set-top boxes with integrated security by July 1 was designed to break up the duopoly enjoyed by Motorola and Scientific Atlanta, cable companies are finding the new boxes with CableCards are costly. Cable companies also point out the CableCard set-top boxes don't provide any additional benefit for the consumers, and many companies have filed waivers with the FCC Media Bureau but with mixed results.
