Expert: Hospitals need to do more to improve patient safety

Improvements in health care also have opened up more space for medical errors, according to Dr. Lucian L. Leape, a patient-safety expert and professor at the Harvard School of Public Health. Leape says hospitals are doing a great deal to improve patient safety and have reduced mortality rates, but they could do even better if they encouraged teamwork and automated noncare functions.
