Number of defined-benefit plans declines, hybrids increase

More than half of the 100 largest American companies still offer defined-benefit plans, a significant decrease from a decade ago. Many companies are seeking alternative plans, such as hybrids, because of the costs and complexities associated with defined-benefit plans.
