Researchers step up use of embryonic stem cells for drug discovery

Scientists have been exploring embryonic stem cells' potential in testing treatments for safety and efficacy "before they even hit clinical trials," a stem cell pioneer said. Roche Holding has begun trials to identify cancer medications that endanger the heart by using beating human heart cells from Cellular Dynamics International, which makes its products from embryonic stem cells. Biotech firm Stemina is transforming embryonic stem cells into live neurons and adding valproate, an epilepsy drug, to search for the cause of autism.
