Smart growth proves a hard sell in Western New York

Even with gas prices rising by the day, developers in Western New York are finding it hard to convince local zoning boards that dense, mixed-use "walkable suburbs" are the wave of the future. Smart-growth developments all across the region have been slowed by opposition from neighbors and a simple lack of familiarity with the concept. "Yes, people here are thinking about walkable communities, but it's hard, because until someone does it here successfully -- well, no one wants to be the pioneer," says Bill Tuyn, president-elect of the Buffalo Niagara Builders Association.
