Stem cells help generate what the body lacks

Biotech firms and independent researchers are using stem cells to produce proteins or hormones that the body cannot make. San Diego-based Novocell is working on transforming embryonic stem cells into insulin producers to treat Type 1 diabetes patients. Osiris Therapeutics has developed mesenchymal stem cell implants derived from bone marrow to treat patients with heart disease and Crohn's disease.
