Calif. educators expect new era of innovation under the common core

Educators in a California district say they expect the Common Core State Standards to help drive innovation and critical thinking in the classroom. Kathy Pon, assistant superintendent for instructional services with the Merced County Office of Education, said part of the focus will be on elevating students' reading skills, so they can master college-level and technical material. Students also will spend time learning about argumentative writing, in which they take a position based on facts.
