Dental boards crack down on teeth-whitening businesses

Dental boards across the U.S. have been cracking down on nondentists who offer teeth whitening, saying the practitioners are unlicensed and the procedure should be overseen only by dentists and dental hygienists. The American Dental Association has petitioned the FDA to reclassify teeth-whitening agents sold directly to consumers that are now considered cosmetics, and some states have passed laws that classify teeth whitening as dentistry.
