McDonald's finds salads a tough sell

McDonald's effort to add healthier fare to the menu isn't resonating with customers, especially when it comes to salads, which the chain first added in 1987. Salads make up a scant 2% to 3% of U.S. sales compared with 13% to 14% for the Dollar Menu, said CEO Don Thompson, who said it might make more sense for the chain to focus advertising efforts on burgers and chicken sandwiches.
