Ore. teacher challenges students to think critically about history

The Tulsa race riot of 1921 was unknown to students in the 11th-grade language arts class at Jefferson High School in Portland, Ore. Co-teacher Linda Christensen writes in this blog post about how she used role-playing and other methods to help students thinking critically about race relations, injustice and dispossession. "For me, teaching a 'people's history' is not merely offering students a fuller, more meaningful history than is included in textbooks. It also means that we engage students in a problem-posing curriculum that brings history to life through role play and simulation," Christensen writes.
