Texas' large cities lead the nation in population growth

Many of the fastest-growing large U.S. cities are located in Texas, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. The state's population increased by more than 425,000 people during the 12-month period that ended in July 2012, but rural areas lacking oil or natural gas deposits shrank, according to Steve Murdock of Rice University. San Marcos, Texas, which swelled nearly 5%, ranked as the quickest-growing large city in the nation.
