After months of wrangling, the South Carolina legislature on Thursday passed one of the toughest illegal immigration laws in the U.S., stoking fears of a labor shortage among some farmers. "I worry about the face we've put on illegal immigration. A brown face," said Democratic Rep. Chris Hart, adding that the bill punishes business owners. The S.C. Farm Bureau worried that legal immigrants would simply bypass the state rather than be subjected to racial profiling by enforcement officials.
