China's Taobao ramps up rivalry with traditional retailers

Taobao, a major e-commerce firm in China, has opened a large home furnishings showroom in Beijing to give customers the opportunity to try out big-ticket items, such as sofas and tables. Customers then place orders online. The five-story showroom is one of the latest efforts by an online retailer moving in on the territory of traditional retailers in China. "The dominant retailer in China someday may be an online retailer," said Richard Ji, an analyst at Morgan Stanley.
