Maintenance costs of a major levee system worry La. officials

The Army Corps of Engineers is completing the massive levee system that will protect Louisiana from hurricane surges, prompting state and local officials to start worrying about the costs in maintaining the levees. The additional costs could amount to $38 million annually. The state could seek federal money for system maintenance and other costs, but the budget-minded Congress is unlikely to approve such a proposal, officials say.
