Minn. hard hat program prepares women for construction work

In Minnesota, there is a growing demand for women to enter the construction industry, and the 20-week "Women Wear Hard Hats, Too" training program at Summit Academy in Minneapolis is aimed at meeting that demand. "We can, you know, climb ladders and crawl on roofs and we can do the same things as men can," says trainee Pam Burd, who will graduate from the program next month. Graduates of the program could end up working on several major projects that require contractors to hire women and minorities, such as the St. Croix Crossing bridge, the Central Corridor Light Rail, to the new Saint Paul Saints Ballpark and the new Vikings stadium.
