National Spelling Bee adds vocabulary component

For the first time in the program's 86-year history, half of competitors' scores in the Scripps National Spelling Bee will be determined by their ability to define the words they spell, both on computer tests and on stage this week in Maryland. "The reason for the change is all about extending the bee's commitment to its purpose, which long has been not only to help students improve their spelling, but also to increase the vocabulary, learn concepts and develop correct English usage," Spelling Bee Director Paige Kimble said.
