Physician says docs must evaluate how they can improve care

Doctors are trained to be autonomous and self-reliant but not self-critical, so it is difficult for them to view the big picture and determine their role in making improvements, said family physician Edward Yoon, medical director for Blue Shield of Northeastern New York. However, the industry is starting to look at quality indicators and physicians are "trying to focus on self-evaluation and create a culture where we are not afraid to say 'we are not doing this correctly,'" he said.
