Ore. school's veterans project will be recognized in Washington, D.C.

Rainier Junior/Senior High School in Oregon is one of six schools that will be recognized in Washington, D.C., later this month during the Hometown Heroes Service Learning Project's official launch. The school's students spent the year collecting data, photos and stories about local military veterans -- particularly those who served in Vietnam -- during a pilot for the program that is supported by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund. "Our students have been very interested in learning about the [histories] of local veterans that have served," said history teacher Andrew Demko.
