GAO: High-deductible insurance plans nearly doubled from 2005

The number of consumers purchasing high-deductible plans nearly doubled from about 3 million in January 2005 to 6 million in January 2006, according to the Government Accountability Office. The policies often are paired with health savings accounts, but critics say the high deductible plans shift costs to employees.
