The concept of the jetpack is said to have first appeared in 1928, and while it became a reality later in the 20th century, few people today fly around with backpack-mounted rockets. It's one of many futuristic notions with roots in science fiction that haven't manifested themselves as envisioned. "Scientists are OK at predicting what technology is going to happen in the future. They're really bad at predicting how it's going to affect us," says Daniel Wilson, author of "Where's My Jetpack?"
