Freestanding EDs compete with hospital units for patients

Health systems are opening freestanding emergency departments in suburban areas that already have good access to care, making competition for hospital-based EDs. Data from 2009 show a 65% increase in the number freestanding EDs spread across 16 states in a five-year period.
