House rejects bill to raise U.S. debt limit

The U.S. House voted 318-97 against a bill to increase the national debt limit by $2.4 trillion. Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer of Maryland said the vote was a "political charade" and manipulated by Republicans, who control the House, to guarantee that the measure would fail. Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said the House "stood with the American people" in demanding that major spending cuts accompany any debt-limit increase.
