U.S. is flunking geography, studies show

The U.S. came in next to last in a recent National Geographic-Roper nine-country survey of basic geographical literacy -- and experts say they aren't surprised. The U.S. has de-emphasized geography education in favor of basic reading, writing and arithmetic, says professor Brennan Kraxberger. "This is a real tragedy, since a geographical perspective cannot simply be replaced with an historical or a sociological perspective," he said.
