Wal-Mart balks at call for global vendor monitoring

Wal-Mart is opposing a request by New York City's pension funds to require the company's vendors around the world to provide yearly reports of working conditions in their factories. Shareholder activists say it's necessary to root out possible workplace-safety and employee-rights violations. The retailer says it would be difficult to obtain such reports and could affect its ability to do business.
