With Android expanding, new chief tries to soothe partners

Google's Android chief, Sundar Pichai, said he was treading carefully in dealing with his hardware partners, saying he must walk a fine line between encouraging a common experience across Android devices and allowing phone-makers to offer customized versions of the open-source software. At an industry forum Thursday, Pichai downplayed concerns about potential competition from Samsung Electronics, saying both companies could be successful. Pichai conceded that he was surprised at his job's scope, a testament to Android's fast-growing reach into areas beyond mobile devices such as machine-to-machine communications.
