Oil companies look to sea floor to anchor production base

Oil production platforms serviced by deep-diving robots may be a reality in as little as six years, according to this article. They would replace surface platforms that are costly to build and vulnerable to sometimes violent weather. The quest for ocean-floor production is driven by companies' realization that "to bring down operating costs, they have to do something drastic," said Tore Halvorsen, senior vice president for subsea technologies at FMC Technologies.
