Renal artery stent benefits patients with stenosis, data show

A meta-analysis discussed at the SCAI 2014 Scientific Sessions evaluated six trials involving 2,031 patients with renal artery stenosis. Researchers found that renal artery stenting in conjunction with medical therapy was better than medical therapy alone, even though patients for whom revascularization is indicated under current guidelines were generally excluded. Patients who underwent medical therapy and renal artery stenting had a 10% lower risk of the composite endpoint encompassing death, stroke, heart failure and worsening of renal function.
